Virtual Reality
From Photography to Virtual Space
Based on historical photos as well as construction and remodelling plans, a rough 3D model was initially created depicting the dimensions of the room. With no detailed layout remaining, the dimensions of individual features were reconstructed in a second step with the help of photos.
Finer 3D models were able to depict surfaces, which were then partially augmented via painted textures.
Building materials and their colouration were determined using photos of similar structures from the time when the Romanisches Café was built, such as the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church or the Institute for Organ Instruments at Hardenbergstraße. In some cases, conservators were able to help.
In a final step, light was added digitally to the textured 3D model of the café, along with several animated tracking shots. These stereoscopic 360-degree images can be viewed with VR glasses, a monitor, tablet or smartphone.
